Local Mitigation Strategy

  • Designed to build disaster resistant communities.
  • Designed to build stronger communities, save jobs, save lives and reduce damage to property from floods, hurricanes and other disasters.
Living in Florida and in particular Brevard County we are exposed to a variety of disaster potentials. We have flooding, severe storms like hurricanes and tornadoes. In addition we have two major space facilities, KSC and CCAS allowing the potential for technological disasters.

No community is safe from disasters and the costs are staggering - in human terms and economically.

The Local mitigation Strategy (LMS), under the umbrella of Brevard Prepares, is a program that encourages communities to come together before disasters occur. It's about building public and private partnerships and identifying risks. It's about prioritizing needs and implementing long term plans to protect communities.

A disaster resistant community will minimize damages from "all hazards" protecting vital infrastructure, services and personal property and outline details for improving building and land development regulatory systems, conducting hazard education programs, developing disaster plans for businesses and creating incentives for residents to take protective measures.

For more information regarding the local program call (321) 637-6670.
